How Many Tablecloths Do I Need for My Event?
A simple formula for sizing and counting tablecloths: table dimensions, drop length, round versus rectangular and how many extras to order.

Tablecloth math is one of those things that seems easy until you are standing at your own table with a tape measure. The good news is that it is three numbers: the table size, the drop you want and the number of tables. Here is how we do it.
Step one: measure the table
Measure the length and width of a rectangular table, or the diameter of a round one. If your table has leaves, measure with the leaves in. For a long table made of several tables, measure each section separately and plan one cloth per section.
Step two: choose your drop
The drop is how far the cloth hangs below the table edge. For a casual meal, 8 to 12 inches is fine. For a formal dinner, 15 to 24 inches looks right. Floor-length cloths need about 29 to 30 inches of drop and are for cocktail tables and head tables.
Step three: do the math
- Rectangular: cloth length = table length + 2 x drop. Cloth width = table width + 2 x drop.
- Round: cloth diameter = table diameter + 2 x drop.
- Square: use a round or square cloth with the same formula.

How many do I need?
One cloth per table, plus one spare. A spare is the cheapest insurance in event planning: a spilled glass of red wine mid-dinner can be swapped in a minute if you have a clean cloth in the closet.
Quick guide by event
- Dinner for 10: one 90 by 156 cloth for a 6 to 8 foot rectangular table, plus one spare.
- Wedding with 100 guests at rounds of 10: ten 120 inch round cloths, plus one or two spares.
- Cocktail party: one floor-length cloth per high-top table, plus one for the bar.
- Dessert table: one cloth plus a runner or overlay.
Napkins, runners and overlays
Order napkins at 1.5 per guest. A runner adds texture and costs little. An overlay adds shimmer to a single table. If you are unsure, tell us your table dimensions at checkout and we will confirm the right size.
